Skinny people are morons

Got your attention? My lovely wife points out this bit of news about a “plus-size beauty pageant winner” in the UK. The New York Daily News article is British plus-size beauty pageant winner may pave way for healthier ideals. That’s great, but over on the UK Daily Mail there’s an article by Monica Grenfell – who obviously must have self-esteem issues – titled A role model for ordinary women? No, Miss England finalist is fat, lazy and a poster girl for ill health. If it isn’t obvious where I stand already, Monica Grenfell is a blithering idiot. From the NY Daily News article:

We won’t see any plus size models flaunting their curves during next week’s Miss USA pageant (a rep has confirmed) but Chloe Marshall will be the first size 14 contestant to strut her stuff at the finals of the Miss England pageant.Marshall, a 17-year-old beauty school student, is 5′10″ and weighs 176 pounds. While Marshall clearly stands out amongst the average pin-thin pageant girls and models, she’s proud of her curves.

Right on. Here’s a pic, found unattributed via google images, copyright included.

Now let’s hear from the blithering idiot – Monica Grenfell:

But as a dietician I am so worried about the damage her well-oiled publicity machine is doing that I think it’s vital to speak out.

In my view, Chloe is a terrible role model.

I hope she doesn’t win the Miss England title.

It would send an appalling – and very dangerous – message to other young women that it’s OK to be fat.

Chloe is a stark reminder that obesity is now virtually normal in our society – and we should all be hanging our heads in shame.

She is an ambassador not for the beautiful larger lady as she’d have us believe but a poster girl for diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, cancers and all the other devastating and potentially fatal health problems that are caused or exacerbated by obesity.

Okay, I like to work my way around in a crazy haphazard manner. That last bit there, about being a poster girl for health problems. Has anyone noticed what kind of health problems you get with malnutrition? You know as well as I do very few women get to be as skinny as these magazine models without a little binge and purge. Anorexia, bulimia, death. Aren’t those pretty big health issues? You can be fat, hell you can be morbidly obese, for years without dying. Follow the links for more information. Bonus: Click here for more anorexia deaths. It’s not that I’m saying being fat is good either, but I don’t think a few pounds makes you “fat”.

By the way, according to the Better Ideal Weight Calculator Miss Marshall is just over the medically recommended weight for her height and age.

Also, according to the NY Daily News article:

In the UK, the Periodic Publishers Association has put out a plea to the fashion industry and invited top editors from mags like Vogue, Elle and Hello! to discuss restricting the use of “photoshopped,” or digitally-enhanced photos. Hope we follow suit!

F.Y.I. I’m one of those skinny people – the high metabolism, naturally skinny type – and I think Chloe is hot. I hope she goes on to become Miss 3rd Dimension, or Miss Pangalactic Gargle Blaster, or Miss Universe. Whatever they call it.
